About

Where hands-on learning meets the classroom

The Mulerider Farmstead is how SAU Agriculture sells what students raise. SAU students do more than study agriculture. They take it from the farm to market.

Raised, managed, and sold by the students who made it happen

Students do the work

From feeding and health checks to planting and harvesting, SAU students do the work. When a product is ready, it is priced, marketed, packaged, and delivered to the customer. Managing a real enterprise from start to finish provides authentic preparation for the students’ professional lives after college. The livestock and plants are real, the deadlines are real, and the customers are, too.

“Students get real-world skills that will be applicable as future school-based agricultural educators.”

Dr. Copie Moore, SAU Agriculture

A harvest at a time

Pork, beef and lamb are marketed when they reach finished weight, and produce is sold when it is ready for harvest. The Mulerider Farmstead operates in seasonal batches, opening when products are ready, selling the available inventory, and closing until the next harvest or finished product is available. Inventory reflects actual availability of a product.

Learn more about SAU Agriculture

SAU’s Department of Agriculture offers degrees in agricultural business, agricultural education, animal science, plant science and pre-veterinary science. Every major shares an “Ag Core” of introductory courses, so students can switch majors in their first semesters without losing credit, and the department supports them with open-door faculty, summer internships and help finding jobs after graduation.
