Scholarships

Acceptance into the BFA Theatre or BFA Musical Theatre degree programs is by audition only.
The theatre department currently offers performance-based scholarships ranging from $500 – $2,500 a semester for up to 8 semesters for students who major in theatre. If you have questions, please contact us here.

Students under scholarship are expected to:

• Audition, and/or apply for a design, technical, or crew assignment for each show unless alternate arrangements have been made in advance with the Director of Theatre or Head of Design.
• Fulfill all requirements of your assigned acting, design, technical, or crew assignment.
• Attend all required department meetings and work calls.
• Register for a minimum of 15 hours of coursework during the semester of the award.
• Complete a minimum of 15 hours of coursework per semester (30 hours per academic year).
• Maintain a GPA of 3.0 in all Theatre classes, as well as maintain an overall minimum GPA of 2.0.
• Declare and/or remain a theatre or musical theatre major. (majors only)
• Show collegiality among fellow students and faculty

Auditions

Your audition/interview plays a primary role in your admission decision. It gives us the opportunity to evaluate your talent and potential and determine if you are compatible with our program.

BFA Theatre (Acting)

• Students should prepare two pieces:
  • One 60-90 second monologue from a contemporary play (1900-present).
  • One 60-90 second monologue from a classic play (before 1900).
    • Monologues must be from published plays.
    • Monologues cannot be from musicals, television shows, or movies.
    • Both monologues must be memorized.

BFA Musical Theatre

• Students should prepare three pieces:
  • One Monologue: Please prepare one 1-2 minute monologue from a contemporary play (1900-present).
  • Two contrasting 1-minute song cuts
    • One song should have been written before 1970. This song can be either the up-tempo or the ballad (student’s choice).
    • One song should be written after 1970 and contrast the style of the first.

BFA Theatre (Design/Tech)

Please bring your portfolio of any design/stage management work you have completed. These examples of your creative work should document your work in the theatre, but may also include:

• Art sketches or painting
• Video or audio tapes
• Photos of scale models, ceramics, or sculptures
• Evidence of fashion design and construction techniques
• Evidence of fashion hair and make-up techniques
• Jewelry designs
• Computer or graphic designs
• Evidence of special engineering or mechanical skills
• Photography
• Evidence of puppetry design and construction techniques
• Stage management binder and/or prompt book

Theatre Minor

Choose one of the following options

• Option One – Students should prepare two contrasting monologues:
  • One 60-90 second monologue from a contemporary play (1900-present).
  • One 60-90 second monologue from a classic play (before 1900).
• Option Two – Students should prepare two pieces:
  • One musical theatre song cut.
  • One 60-90 second monologue from a contemporary play (1900-present).
• Option Three – Students should prepare a 2-minute presentation of a technical/design portfolio. These examples of creative work should document their work in the theatre and may include:
  • Art sketches or paintings
  • Video or audio recordings
  • Photos of scale models, ceramics, or sculptures
  • Evidence of fashion design and construction techniques
  • Evidence of fashion hair and make-up techniques
  • Jewelry designs
  • Computer or graphic designs
  • Evidence of special engineering or mechanical skills
  • Photography
  • Evidence of puppetry design and construction techniques
  • Stage management binder and/or excerpts from a prompt book

Video Auditions

Although we strongly recommend scheduling a live audition if possible, the Department of Theatre does accept video auditions instead of live auditions.

Musical Theatre

Introduction: State your name, year, and intended program (Musical Theatre).

Song: Two contrasting 1-minute song cuts

• One song should have been written before 1970. This song can be either the up-tempo or the ballad (student’s choice).
• One song should be written after 1970 and contrast the style of the first.

Monologue:

• One Monologue: Please prepare one 1-2 minute monologue from a contemporary play (1900-present).
• Optional: Short dance combo (30–45 seconds) in any style that shows your strengths.

Theatre (Acting)

Introduction: State your name, year, and intended program (Acting).

Monologues: Perform two 1-2 minute contrasting monologues

• One Contemporary Monologue (written after 1900)
• One Classic Monologue (Written before 1900)

Total Length: No more than 4 minutes total.

Technical Theatre / Design & Production

Introduction: State your name, year, intended program (Technical), and intended area of focus (Scenic, Lighting, Costumes, Sound, Stage Management, etc.).

Portfolio Presentation: Show or describe 2–3 projects, designs, or production roles you’ve worked on.

Optional: Include short clips or photos of your work.

Total Length: No more than 7 minutes.

Theatre Minor

Introduction: State your name, year, and that you are applying for the Theatre Minor.

Submission: Choose one of the following:

• Perform two 1-2 minute contrasting monologues
  • One Contemporary Monologue (written after 1900)
  • One Classic Monologue (Written before 1900)

OR

• One contemporary musical theatre song cut (1970-present)
• One 60-90 second monologue from a contemporary play (1900-present).
• A 1–2 minute presentation of a technical/design portfolio

Total Length: No more than 2 minutes.
