         •   A trained collaborator in the writing process

         •   A writing skills strategist

How do consultants help me?

Our ultimate goal is to help you become a better writer. Our concerns go beyond working on one particular paper. While we're happy to work with you on ideas, organization, sentence structure, etc. in a particular piece of writing, we have  larger issues about critical thinking, style, and writing strategies in mind. For this reason, conferences are highly interactive. We are trained to focus on immediate problems in a writing assignment, yet help you develop skills that will serve you throughout your college career and beyond. As you work with us, you'll find that you are gradually becoming a strong writer yourself.

We also know that writers differ greatly from each other, and each writer has specific needs according to their own strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, we seek to get to know you personally and respond to your writing according to your need.

Can you help with reading?

Yes. We can help you read any text and brainstorm for ideas to write about it. Bring the text with you when you come to the Writing Center. The session will be most effective if you come prepared with specific sections that you don't understand or with specific questions.

Can you help with English grammar?

During the conference, we will :

         •   Give you a form to fill out for record-keeping purposes

               your writing

         •   Listen as you explain your needs, comments, and questions

         •   Read your paper, brainstorm with you about your ideas, and/or help you
               locate and use resources

         •   Encourage you to take control of the conference and of your writing

What do I need to bring with me to a conference?

The least you need to bring is yourself. You are welcome to bring your ideas, notes, hand-written rough drafts, or even final drafts. We can work with you at any stage of your writing process. You don't have to be finished -- or even started -- to come for a conference. However, if possible, bring your assignment prompt and any relevant texts with you. It will help us to help you.

Can I meet with the same consultant again?

Yes, you can, but to ensure that you meet with a specific person, it is better to schedule an appointment in advance.

Can I drop my paper off and have someone review it? Can I email my paper to you & have someone review it?

We prefer working with students face-to-face. This allows us to ask you questions and for you to ask questions back. Through conversation, we can help you clarify the assignment, purpose, and intentions and meanings of your work., and we can help you find and fix problems with grammar and style. Because we work with you, you will not only improve your paper, you'll learn writing skills and strategies that will help with your next paper - and that is our ultimate goal. Meeting face-to-face is the most effective and most efficient way of doing this.

However, we recognize that face-to-face meetings are not always possible, and for that reason, we are planning to offer online consultation in the near future. You can email your paper or your question to us via this website, and we will send you feedback as soon as possible. For technical reasons, we prefer you sending your soft version to us via email rather than dropping off your paper.
