What is a Writing Center?
Located in Magale 101, the SAU Writing Center is a
student-centered facility where
students can bring their writing for any class at any stage in the
writing process.

Students visit
the 2003 SAU Writing Center Open House to learn more about our
services.
Mission Statement
Our
student-centered facility is
designed to encourage peer interaction, to establish writing as a
multi-disciplinary goal, and to support the idea that writing
enhances learning.
We offer students from all backgrounds and disciplines an
opportunity to confer with trained writing consultants at any stage
of the writing process.
Writers are guaranteed not only an establishment that
respects their opinions, needs, and abilities but also consultants
who are trained to be compassionate, interested, active readers of a
variety of papers.
Our goal in the writing center is to offer our clients
one-to-one interaction that will be beneficial in the overall
improvement of their writing skills and that will
encourage
personal confidence in their abilities as writers.
Our History
Since our opening in Fall
2000, our writing center has helped approximately 3,000 SAU students
improve their writing skills and successfully complete course
papers, theses, dissertations, and articles for publication — in
all sorts of academic disciplines – as well as other forms of
writing, such as resumes, personal statements, and cover letters
through one-to-one peer interaction.
In the past four years, we
have made several improvements to the center. In the Fall of 2002, we
installed six computers for students to use for online research and
composition. The SAU
Writing Center Computer Lab also allows for conferencing at the
computers, which permits students to make changes to their works
during the conference. In
the Fall of 2003, we purchased five café-style tables and sixteen
rolling chairs to better facilitate conferencing.
In past years, we have
sponsored the “Bare Walls” art contest to brighten our
consulting space. We
currently have the art of Professor Doug Waterfield on display.
In the future we hope to
offer online conferencing as well.
Funding
The SAU Writing Center is
University supported through student fees and directly affiliated
with Student Affairs.
