Mid-Term Assignment

"For All the Marbles"

Using the techniques and terminology we have learned in this class so far in the semester, you will combine everything into a single, encompassing design. You will use paint, pencil, marker and cut paper as well as collage elements to create this design.

The design will include the following:

  • Lines that are expressive
  • Horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines
  • Geometric, biomorphic and amorphic shapes
  • Simulated texture through rubbing, stamping and drawing
  • Positive and negative space
  • The use of perspective in some form
  • The use of light and dark values
  • A portion of a work of art or a photograph, converted by you to values of grey
  • Collage elements of grey, both torn from a magazine and from painted swatches
  • The incorporation of type in some form (printed and/or handwritten)
  • It will be achromatic, or existing only in black, white and tones of grey. The finished size will be 16" x 20", mounted to foamboard for a final size of 18" x 22."

You are to work with all of these elements to create a non-traditional self portrait. That means you must create a portrait of yourself in a non-conventional way (one that has not been done before). It does not have to be representational, but it does have to be creative!

Due Wednesday, October 9 at the beginning of class. No late work accepted! Mid-term Critique (which will constitute part of your grade for this assignment) will occur at this time as well as your mid-term terminology test. Be ready to rock and roll!
