Two-Dimensional Design
Free Study: Painted Still-Life, Four-Four-Four-Four Versions in One
You will create an original still-life painting composed of objects of your choice. The still life should contain at least five objects, no more than 10. Include both organic and inorganic materials. The design should be interesting and the composition harmonious. Incorporate positive and negative space in each, as well as some simulated texture (ex. crumpled paper), light and dark values, chirascuro.
Also, include at least one reflective metal object. Accurate rendering of a metallic surface will only be achieved through an intense observation of how the reflections work do sketches, practice this before you put brush to paper.
You will also want to pay close attention to highlights and shadows, especially if you use multiple light sources this will make or break your painting! Please attempt to render this still life as realistic as possible no modernized stylization or simplification paint the objects exactly as they are, paying close attention to detail.
The still life should appear with FOUR DIFFERENT color schemes incorporated within the same image. Each format should comprise roughly 1/4 of the composition. These formats are:
Full Color, Monochromatic, Complementary and Analogous
You may paint on paper, cardboard, canvas or canvasette. Final size of your image should be 18 x 18". Mount on foamboard with 1" border. You may use your acrylics, or oil paints. You may also use watercolors. You will grid off your painting, each section of the grid will be in a specific color scheme.
I want to see a proposal and rough sketch of your designs by next class period. Have fun and do a good job. Remember, this is your final examination, worth 100 points (equivalent to about ten projects!) Work hard, do it neatly, be creative. This is fopr the big, brass ring.
Here are a couple of suggestions on how you might divide your still life. You do not have to follow either of these approaches if you have a more creative solution.
