Dan Howard

Dan Howard was born on August 4, 1931 in Iowa City, Iowa and received both his BA and MFA from the University of Iowa. In 1958, he joined the faculty at Arkansas State University and was appointed chairman in 1965. He went on to serve as chairman of the art department at Kansas State University before finally becoming chairman of the art department at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1974, where he presently remains.

Howard paints semirealistic paintings that fall between abstraction and representational art. His large canvases display his gestural, swirling style that resembles the works of the Abstract Expressionists. He strives for movemement to "force the eye over the picture plane"; he wants the viewers to see images that do not appear at first glance. Howard's paintings can be found in over 300 public, private, and business collections located in 25 states.
