SAU Station Personnel
Jamie Brandon (Research Station Archeologist) received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, his MA from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and his BA from the University of Memphis. He has more than 20 years of experience in the field of archaeology, has been involved with projects in a total of 13 southeastern states and has authored or co-authored publications and/or technical reports on research in seven of those states. Dr. Brandon has worked at all stages of investigation and on sites dating from the Pleistocene to the twentieth century. He has worked with the Arkansas Archeological Survey in various capacities since 1997 and is the co-owner &
moderator for the African-American Archaeology Listserv, an on-line group for the discussion of the archeology of the African Diaspora in the New World (associated with the African Diaspora Archaeology Network). Dr. Brandon is the co-editor of Household Chores, Household Choices: Theorizing the Domestic Sphere in Historical Archaeology (University of Alabama Press, 2004) and has authored several scholarly articles appearing in Historical Archaeology, Arkansas Archeologist, Mississippi Archaeology and the Tennessee Anthropologist. His research interests include historical archaeology of the 19th century South, late-period prehistoric/protohistoric cultures of the mid-south and trans-mississippi south, cultural and historical memory and working with descendant communities. Carl Carlson-Drexler (Research Assistant) is a Ph.D. candidate in the historical archeology program at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and a research archeologist with the USACE's Construction Engineering Research Laboratory. He specializes in conflict archeology and is working on Civil War-related sites in southwest Arkansas--especially the site of Dooley's Ferry in Hempstead County on the Red River. Carl will be "in residence" in southwest Arkansas starting in the Fall of 2009--teaching at SAU and working on his dissertation. He is a veteran of the Van Winkle's Mill project. Holli Howard (Technical Assistant & Laboratory Manager) has a BA in History from Southern Arkansas University. Holli is a native of Ruston, Louisiana but has lived in Hawaii, Virginia, Texas, North Carolina, California, and New Orleans, Louisiana, before coming back to the Ark-La-Tex. Holli worked with the SAU Magale Library and was an intern with the AAS-SAU Research Station in 2009 before coming on board at the AAS-SAU Research Station Lab Manager. Holli is interested in Victoriana, archival work and museum studies. Anthony Clay Newton (Technical Assistant & Field Assisstant) has a BA in History from Southern Arkansas University. Mr. Newton is a Magnolia native and a professional archeological technician who has worked for various cultural resource management companies on projects in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Mississippi. He is also member of the Arkansas Archeological Society and has served on the AAS Board of Advisors since 2000. Mr. Newton is interested in the archeology and history of southwestern Arkansas and the Ark-La-Tex region. Clay is also an accomplished photographer and camera collector.
