Department of Nursing

We, the faculty, feel you have selected the most challenging, rewarding and versatile career available today. Aerial view of the Wharton Nursing building on the SAU campusWe believe that a Nurse is one who possesses considerable knowledge of the basic physical, biological, behavioral, and medical sciences, plus the ability and skill to apply this knowledge in caring for patients with common nursing problems. This requires decision-making ability and sound judgment.

We dedicate our time and effort to offer you those experiences that will assist you in reaching this goal. The learning experiences will be available; it is your responsibility to take advantage of them. SAU provides equal educational opportunities for all and this policy is fully implemented in all programs according to University guidelines.

The Department of Nursing offers two programs:

  • Associate of Science degree in Nursing (A.D.N) (NLN accredited and Arkansas State Board of Nursing approved), which includes the LPN/LVN to RN "Fast Track".
    • The purpose of the LPN-RN Transition Program is to provide upward mobility for qualified Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (LPN/LVN), and Licensed Psychiatric Technician Nurses (LPTN). This separate track option provides the opportunity to complete all requirements for the Associate of Science Nursing Degree. Students may complete the general education course requirements at SAU or any accredited college or university. The LPN-RN Transition Program at SAU consists of three academic semesters. Southern Arkansas University adheres to Arkansas State Board of Nursing Articulation Model.
  • RN-BSN Online Completion Program (NLN accredited)

Graduates of the Associate of Science degree in Nursing are eligible to apply for the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and complete the written exam for initial licensure.
