Book Report Instructions for
the Class
You are going to put together a book report on Hatchet. We are going to use a lot of symbolism
for this report.
Make a list of six to ten objects you would want
to have with you if you were lost in the wilderness or some other hostile,
lonely place. What would you most want
to take? What would you be able to
carry? What would come in most
handy? This is your survival kit.
Next list the most important events in the
story. There should be as many events
as there are items in the survival kit.
Use your essay to choose the important events.
Match the events with items in your kit. Be creative. How could the event and the item relate? How could the item be symbolic?
For example, one item I might choose to take is
a lighter. The lighter could represent
when Brian learned to start a fire.
Write a description on the 3 x 5 cards I give
you. Include the changes in Brian,
taken from your essay, in these descriptions.
You will make or cut out pictures of the
objects and glue them to sheets of construction paper, along with the
descriptions.
When you finish, we will staple the pages
together and make a book.
