‘Riders Preparing For Opener
Magnolia, Ark.—After eight practice sessions, Southern Arkansas University head football coach Steve Quinn said “I am very pleased that our players returned in great shape. I feel like they worked hard during the summer and it showed in our conditioning tests. Our players have a good attitude and are doing a good job. They are adjusting to the new (NCAA) practice schedule.”
The coach added “We are banged up---some nagging injuries---at the present time that is keeping some out of practice. Because of this, we have not as much continuity as I would like, but it should come after two-a-days are over and we get everyone back.”
After the first five days of practice, Quinn sent his Muleriders through their first two-a-day workouts Thursday and worked once Friday. SAU will practice twice Saturday and will have two practice sessions Monday, the second one at night. After Tuesday’s drills, SAU will scrimmage for the last time Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. before the season opener September 4 at Tarleton State. The season’s first depth chart will be posted after Sunday’s practice.
Quinn went on to say that senior Jordan Babineaux has successfully made the transition from strong safety to cornerback, linebacker Keenan Washington has established himself as a leader on defense, Brian Davis is solid at free safety, running back Torrence Jones has been consistent, he is pleased with all three quarterbacks (Ted Williams, Damian Melancon and Jabari Woods), wide receiver Nik Lewis looks good and both the offensive and defensive lines have made improvement in the eight practices. He added “Our veterans came back ready to play---I am anxious for it to all come together.”
The coach singled out two newcomers who have caught his attention, running back D.D. Holyfield and strong safety C.J. Ellis, both of Hope.
After meeting Tarleton State in Stephenville on Thursday, September 4, the ‘Riders play their first home game Saturday, September 13, against Texas A&M-Commerce, at 7 p.m.
