SAU’s Lewis Named All-America

Magnolia, Ark.-Nik Lewis, a 5-10, 190-pound wide receiver at Southern Arkansas University, has been selected on the first-team 2002 D2Football.com All-America team. Lewis, a junior from Jacksboro, Tex., was one of only two players on offense chosen from the Gulf South Conference. The other GSC All-America selection was Delta State University offensive lineman Chris Booker, a 6-2, 290-pound senior from Clarendon, Ark.

Lewis, already a first-team member of the All-GSC and the Daktronics All-South Region, had a banner season with the Muleriders, setting four new school records and tying another. He had 1,239 receiving yards in 2002, caught 14 touchdown passes last fall and has 22 career touchdown receptions in two years, all new records. He tied a record for touchdown receptions in a game with three against Ouachita Baptist University. He also broke the old all-purpose yardage record with 1,429 yards in a season.

Defensive lineman Tommy Edwards of Arkansas Tech University was the only player from the GSC named to the first-team D2Football.com defense.

Tight end Landon Trusty of the University of Central Arkansas was the only GSC player on the second-team All-America offense while defensive lineman DeWayne Smith of GSC champion and national runner-up Valdosta State University was the only conference member on the second-team defense.

Valdosta placed three on the honorable mention offense, quarterback Buster Faulkner, running back Aaron Jenkins and wide receiver Reggie Mosley while defensive lineman Tim Love of Harding University was the only GSC representative on the honorable mention defense.
