Magnolia, Ark.—Southern Arkansas University linebacker Eddie Key has been named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District VI Football Team, according to District Coordinator Bill Powers of Texas A&M-Commerce.
District VI includes college players from the states of Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Players from the Gulf South Conference include those from Delta State, Harding, Central Arkansas, Arkansas Tech, Henderson State and SAU. Others represented were Hardin-Simmons, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Texas A&M-Commerce, Trinity, West Texas A&M, McMurry and Angelo State from Texas, in addition to Southwestern Oklahoma and Eastern New Mexico.
Key, SAU’s Male Scholar-Athlete for the 2000-01 academic year, was the winner of the Bill Gates Scholarship Award, has made every possible GSC All-Academic/Honor Roll team possible in his four years as a Mulerider, has a 3.8 out of a possible 4.0 GPA in Criminal Justice and recently received an $18,000 Post-Graduate Scholarship that was awarded to only 16 student-athletes in the nation and was one of two from the NCAA Division II level.
A 6-2, 220-pound senior from Longview (Pine Tree), Tex., Key was a four-year letterman and three-year starter who made first-team All-GSC both in 2000 and 2001 and was the leading tackler for the ‘Riders in 2001.
