SAU Wins 10-0 In A Defensive Battle
Magnolia, AR--Jason
Williams booted a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter and quarterback Tim
Barrington scored on a five-yard keeper in the third period to provide all the
scoring as Southern Arkansas University blanked stubborn Ouachita Baptist University
here Saturday night. SAU is now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference
while the Tigers fell to 1-2 for the season and 1-1 in league play.
Both defenses dominated
play. The Mulerider defense put the highly-regarded SAU wishbone offense in
excellent field position time after time but the Tigers turned back every SAU
threat except for the two occasions that prevented the game from being a
scoreless deadlock. Barrington took a knee on the OBU one on the final play of
the game after the Tigers went for it on fourth down deep on their end of the
field.
Barrington had 128 net
yards rushing on 21 carries to lead all rushers. Redshirt freshman halfback
Montoya Brown led the Tigers with 60. The 'Riders finished with 173 yards
rushing compared to 80 for the Tigers. Barrington completed four of 12 pass
attempts for 77 yards while OBU used three quarterbacks for only four
completions in 15 attempts for 47 yards. In all, the 'Riders gained 250 yards
to only 127 for the Tigers.
Linebackers Marcoles Board
and DeVares Campbell had eight and seven tackles to pace the 'Riders, which
kept the Tiger defense in poor field position throughout the game. Defensive
end T.J. Bingham had 10 tackles for OBU, including four for losses. Linebacker
J.R. Eldridge also was an obstacle in the 'Rider offensive attack.
The ‘Riders will be at the
University of West Alabama next Saturday in a kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
