HESI-ADMISSION ASSESSMENT EXAM
FOR
NURSING STUDENT APPLICANTS

General Information
The Admission Assessment Exam consists of FOUR academic exams, as well as a personality profile that identifies the individual applicant's learning style. The Hesi-Admission Assessment Exam will consist of the following:

  • Reading Comprehension - Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.
     
    • 47 items Time allotment: 50 minutes
       
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge - Contains vocabulary terms that are used commonly in both general English speaking and in the health care fields.
     
    • 50 items Time allotment: 50 minutes
       
  • Grammar - Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc.
     
    • 50 items Time allotment: 50 minutes
       
  • Basic Math Skills - Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, general math facts, etc.
     
    • 50 items Time allotment: 50 minutes
       
  • Learning Style - Assesses the preferred learning style of the prospective applicant and offers test-taking and study tips suited to that learning style.
     
    • 14 items Time allotment: 15 minutes

Testing at SAU Only

  • The SAU Office of Counseling and Testing is a Controlled Testing Center. The HESI Admission exam is offered by appointment on the dates and times listed.
  • Call the office to schedule an appointment. Appointments should be made at least 48 hours prior to your desired testing date.
  • Appointments are limited to 23 examinees per test day.
  • On the day of testing, please bring photo identification (i.e. driver license, school ID, etc) and the $45.00 testing fee. No admittance without proper ID.
  • The test is approximately 4 hours including check-in time; however, test-takers can leave when the test battery is completed.
  • One retake exam will be given for test failures ONLY (based on space availability). The most recent score will be used for ranking purposes.
  • Scores may be used for one year following the date of examination.
  • Test must be completed by February 28 for fall semester admission, and by September 30 for spring semester admission.
