Department of Biology
Graduates of the four-year degree program in Biology have excellent records
in graduate school and as scientists, educators, and professionals in health
fields that require the complete biological training offered in this Department.
The Department offers numerous pre-professional tracks of study required by
medical, dental, pharmacy, and other health science schools as well as an
academic minor in biology.
As a department that prepares majors for a diversity of professions, the
faculty is committed to providing a quality science education and proper
academic advising, informal counseling, and mentoring that will prepare students
so they can perform well on entrance exams such as the GRE, MCAT, etc. Upon
entrance into these programs it is hoped that the students will be well prepared
so that they will not only become good physicians, etc. but will also become
good citizens because of their "training" at SAU.
One of the ways that the department instills enthusiasm for and understanding
of the scientific method in its students is by faculty involvement in research.
The SAU biology faculty's research leads South Arkansas in the field of ecology
and environmental biology and has made important contributions in the areas of
molecular biology. Students can experience the scientific method at work under
the director of a faculty mentor. This type of student learning is considered
best by U.S. science educators.
SAU students applying for admission in professional schools have had a
tremendous success rate. Facilities include student study lounge, independent
study labs, and the Logan Biological Field laboratory and research boats on
nearby Lake Columbia.
