The SAU Farm
The SAU 660-acre farm is a vital part of the teaching program of the
Agriculture Department of the University. The farm surrounding the University
consists of rolling hills interspersed with timber. It provides a unique
opportunity for students majoring in agricultural disciplines to take classroom
theory and apply the results to hands-on learning and work opportunities
utilizing laboratory exercises similar to those experienced in the workplace.
Many students earn a portion of their collegiate expenses by working on the
farm.
The farm utilizes new and improved species of grasses and legumes, which are
used for grazing of livestock, production of hays and forages as well as for
teaching practices for producing forages. The pasture land houses several breeds
of beef and dairy cattle, Quarter Horses, Suffolk sheep, goats, and rodeo stock.
SAU has the only collegiate dairy in Arkansas or in the southern area that is
used for teaching and hands-on work activities for students. The herd consists
of the six major breeds of dairy cattle -- Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey,
Jersey, Ayrshire, and Milking Shorthorn. Coupled with a fantastic dairy is an
outstanding beef enterprise that is used for genetics, reproductive physiology,
and beef production laboratory exercises. Herds consists of Hereford, Brangus,
Shorthorn, Brahman, and Longhorn.
In addition to the cattle operations, the SAU Farm has two broiler houses
which are maintained under commercial conditions and are used for laboratory
exercises and work experiences. This enterprise allows students to prepare for
careers in the poultry industry.
Greenhouses, forage plots, horticulture, agronomy and forestry plots provide
students with real world opportunities in propagation, planting, transplanting
and marketing plants or entering the forestry industry.
We of the SAU Agriculture Department invite you to visit our farm
laboratories and observe the livestock operations, the forage and horticulture
operations, as well as our rodeo program. Call 870-235-4340 for information or
