Art Department Scholarships
Scholarship Application [pdf]
Each year, the art department at SAU offers several scholarships to
qualifying and deserving candidates. There are scholarships available that pay
for full and partial tuition, as well as room and board. Awards are given
according to those who best meet departmental criteria, and are offered to
assist those students who might not otherwise be able to attend college.
Among the scholarships we offer are the Shirley Jeffcoat Combs Scholarship,
the Bobo Shinn Scholarship and Performance Scholarships.
GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS.
- During each spring semester the SAU Art Department will sponsor a
competitive (invitational) art exhibition for high school seniors who expect
to enter college the following fall semester.
- From this competition four winners will be selected for specific merit
awards by a juror from outside the university. Each of the four merit
winners will be asked to present a portfolio of their recent work for
evaluation.
- The Scholarship recipient will then be chosen from these four winners by
a committee composed of the SAU Art Department staff and one art student
selected by members of the art staff.
The Art Department of SAU reserves the right to withhold awarding the
scholarship to the merit winners if none of the work submitted meets the
standards of quality deemed necessary by the Department. The Art Department
would then award the scholarship to any deserving student based on criteria
listed below.
STUDENT PORTFOLIO
The student portfolio should include five drawing and five completed works in
painting, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design or a combination of the above.
If the Scholarship winner fails to enroll at SAU for the following fall session
the scholarship will be awarded to one of the runner-up candidates. If none of
the other candidates are enrolled in the SAU Art Department as an art major, the
art faculty will award the scholarship to any other worthy major who is
currently in the SAU art program.
OBLIGATION TO THE ART DEPARTMENT
- Must major in art or art education.
- Must provide a certain number of hours per week of uncompensated service
to the Art Department. The number of hours is determined by the type of
scholarship received.
