Virtual Instructor Certification Program
Virtual Instruction
The Internet and the World Wide Web are powerful resources to enhance teaching and learning. Educators can use the Web to raise the quality of teaching and learning in traditional live classrooms as well as to reach a wider audience of students through Web-based courses. Web-based teaching and learning requires instructors to develop a new set of skills. The Virtual Instructor Certification course teaches the skills that are essential to use Web-based resources for effective teaching and learning. The course will enable educators to create both Web-based courses and Web-support for traditional face-to-face classrooms.  Knowledge of Blackboard Release 6.1 is a prerequisite for the course.

Collaborative videoconferencing is more than just interactive video.  It is the use of a variety of telecommunication technologies to connect teachers, learners, and content, and to foster collaboration across geographic distances.  The Virtual Instructor Certification Program will provide educators with the skills and strategies to collaborate effectively across distances using videoconferencing and other technologies.

Each participant will

  • Convert a traditional course to Web-based modality or develop a Web site to support a traditional teaching/learning environment (classroom).

  • Explore the Web-based courseware product: Blackboard Release 6.1.

  • Gain experience as a learner in a Web-based course.

  • Network with other educators utilizing Web-based instruction.

  • Apply principles of learning and instructional design.

  • Learn to use the tools of Web-based instruction.

  • Get peer and expert support during initial implementation of Web-based course.

  • Get acquainted with the  basic equipment and operations of interactive video in order to facilitate videoconferences.

  • Adapt materials and management techniques to a distant learning environment.

  • Will design and develop presentations for distance learning environments using multimedia and other delivery modalities.

How it Works

The program includes on-ground instruction as well as on-line instruction. The course begins with the on-line component. For the on-ground component of the course, participants will bring course materials to the session where they will learn to modify them for web-based delivery and discuss various issues related to course conversion.  Participants will also learn interactive strategies and presentation techniques for videoconferencing course delivery.
